Share this event on How Speed Dating Works in Birmingham When you arrive at the Birmingham venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date. You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don’t. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink.

To the end of the room and through a small doorway and you were into a more labyrinthine part of the museum with vintage cars, aircraft parts, the last tram to run in Birmingham along with sound when a button was pressed, of course and — one of my personal favourites — ten to 15 radios dating back some years or so with a little control panel. A tune would be playing and by pressing a series of buttons, the tune would switch to playing through the corresponding radio so you could hear the differences in sound quality over the years.
I must have spent a day or two every holiday mooching around inside the Museum and knew every exhibit inside out the sands of time, however, have gradually eroded this knowledge, sadly. As mentioned elsewhere, I left Birmingham for many years and when I returned at the close of the s the Museum of Science and Industry was no more — closed for good and a new pretender to the name was emerging on Curzon Street to be opened as ThinkTank in , part of the Millennium Point development.
Furthermore, take a look at the photographs below to see how many buildings have been retained at the site during the preparation for the Newhall Square development. The demolition and clearance workd at the Museum site began in October and is now virtually complete as can be seen below.

History of Birmingham , Economic history of Birmingham , Science and invention in Birmingham , and Timeline of Birmingham history Pre-history and medieval Birmingham’s early history is that of a remote and marginal area. The main centres of population, power and wealth in the pre-industrial English Midlands lay in the fertile and accessible river valleys of the Trent , the Severn and the Avon. The area of modern Birmingham lay in between, on the upland Birmingham Plateau and within the densely wooded and sparsely populated Forest of Arden.
Instead of the economies of scale of a low-paid, unskilled workforce producing a single bulk commodity such as cotton or wool in large, mechanised units of production, Birmingham’s industrial development was built on the adaptability and creativity of a highly paid workforce with a strong division of labour , practising a broad variety of skilled specialist trades and producing a constantly diversifying range of products, in a highly entrepreneurial economy of small, often self-owned workshops.

My mother would take me shopping in the city centre almost every week even when I was only three years of age. By the time I was six I was using the trams daily for my journey to school — about a mile from the terminus of the Washwood Heath 10 route as far as Ward End Park. The first Corporation electric trams were introduced in and the system built up to reach a total of over 80 route miles by , after which decline set in, with the last tram running on 4th July In total, Birmingham had trams although not all of those were in service at the same time.
